State Name Meaning Quiz

State Name Meaning Quiz

Most people do not know the meaning of their state’s name. This is a great way to have a game that is both fun and educational. So much history and stories lie behind each state’s name. This game is a great springboard into talking about the states you will be visiting on the tour or enticing them to travel to other states in the future. It also is a great conversation starter as passengers begin to talk with each other about where they have traveled.

Examples:

  • Dakota Sioux for ‘sky-tinted water’ or ‘cloudy water’ referring to a river of the same name
    • Minnesota
  • Aztec for ‘silver-bearing’, Pima for ‘little spring place’ or Basque for ‘good oak’
    • Arizona
  • Probably Iroquois river name meaning ‘meadowland’, ‘dark and bloody ground’ or ‘land of tomorrow’
    • Kentucky
  • Probably for a fictional island in 16th-century novel ‘Las Sergas de Esplandián’
    • California
  • Spanish for ‘snow covered’
    • Nevada
